Overhead Doors And Its Different Types

Commercial Overhead Doors

Today, old traditional swinging doors are swapped by overhead doors to large an extent. Overhead doors used for residential structures are pretty much the same with many of the ones used for commercial and industrial buildings. Unlike traditional garage doors, overhead doors can be opened manually or by a garage door opener.

Overhead Doors come in many designs; however, tilt up, roll over and sectional units are the most preferred designs. Out of this three tilt up design is the oldest and it is a single panel which is raised up to the ceiling of the garage. Roll up garage door is made up a number of small sections joined together to form a single large unit. The third design sectional units are made from 3-4 panels each of them joined with axles or hinges which help them to roll up into the coil overhead.

Different types of Overhead doors:

Steel and Wood Sectional Roll-up:

Steel Sectional Doors are used in many commercial applications. When open, the door rests horizontally overhead with as little as 12 of headroom above the door opening. However, with enough headroom sectional doors can also be installed for a vertical lift arrangement to minimize lighting obstruction. Sectional doors are supported by a spring counter balance system with cables to provide easy opening. Steel and wood sectional roll-up doors can be insulated, weather-sealed, or both.

Features:
- Automatic motor operation with many control options
- Safety reversing devices
- Vision windows: Full or partial
- Insulation values of R5 to R14
- Availability in aluminum, fiberglass or wood

Insulated Doors:
Insulated commercial doors help to keep buildings warmer in the winter as well as cooler in the summer. These doors are also used to diminish noise from the outside. It can easily pay for themselves over a few years by reducing heating and cooling costs while keeping interior environment quieter. In addition, insulated doors are typically less noisy during operation.

Feature:
- Foam-filled urethane or styrene core panels or slats
- Guide weather stripping and manual or motorized operation
- Insulation values vary from R-3 to R-14
- STC rating 24

Canopy Doors:
Canopy doors use a spring to balance the door as well as to help lift to the open position. They are very durable and have the option to include a pilot door for personnel and allow building to access without opening the larger door. This flexibility can lower the heating and cooling costs by minimizing the opening of large doors.

Features:

- One piece construction and spring operated
- Pilot door option and full or half canopy style
- Durable, lasts decades
- Manual operation
- Not appropriate for motor control

Horizontal Sliding Doors:
Horizontal sliding doors can be used in large hangars and smaller industrial buildings. Doors can also incorporate a pilot door for easy personnel access without opening the larger slider. Basic components of horizontal sliding doors are panels with rollers on top, hanging from an overhead track. Heavier or larger hangar doors may utilize a v-groove or railway wheels supported in a floor track. Sliding doors are run without springs, cables or motors and are too simple to use as well as maintain.

Overhead doors come in a variety of colors and glass vision lights. One of the best features of overhead garage doors is its automatic operators as well as remote control openers. However, manually operated doors are also available which are open and closed via a chain or a track system.

So, with the above discussion about overhead doors and its different types you can select overhead doors as per your commercial and industrial application.

You point out some great features of the different types of industrial doors. Before beginning to install one of these doors, a good first step, and a great resource for some important information is McGraw Hill's Sweet Directory of construction products and manufacturers. They offer the most complete directory I have ever found, and I love the exceptionally useful CAD details they offer on their site as well. You can even download them. While I do work for them, I use all the time because they are a valuable and reliable resource. i definitely recommend them.
